Nikon has announced the AF-S DX Nikkor 10-24mm F3.5-4.5G ED, an ultra-wideangle zoom for DX format DSLRs. This mid-range optic offers a minimum focus distance of 0.24m through the entire zoom range, and includes a built-in AF-S motor that enables autofocus on entry-level Nikon bodies (including the D5000 also announced today). The optical formula consists of 14 elements in 9 groups, including 3 aspherical elements and 2 ED glass elements to combat aberrations. It will be available from May at a cost of €849.

We've had a brief opportunity to handle the new lens, and in design terms it’s placed clearly in the middle of Nikon's range, with build and finish resembling lenses like the AF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6G DX VR.

Given the similar basic specification, there will undoubtedly be some speculation over a possible relationship between the Nikon 10-24mm and Tamron's recently-introduced 10-24mm F3.5-4.5. However the two are clearly not the same design; the Tamron lens has a different optical formula (12 elements in 9 groups with 4 aspherical elements, 2 LD glass elements and 1 HID glass element) and is about 3mm shorter in length. Having said that, comparison of the optical diagrams does reveal a distinct similarity between the underlying layouts (the Nikon's is shown below, the Tamron's is available here).

Nikon launches the AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24MM F/3.5-4.5G ED

New ultra-wide-angle zoom with SWM

Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 14th April 2009 – Nikon Europe is pleased to announce the introduction of the AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24MM F/3.5-4.5G ED lens. This new NIKKOR DX-format ultra-wide-angle zoom lens has a focal range starting at 15mm equivalent in FX/35mm format.

At a very affordable price, this new lens with superior build quality would be a great addition to anyone’s Nikon system. It is perfect for users wanting to shoot scenes that require a wide angle perspective effect such as in a small room, or for shooting architecture and landscapes.

Ludovic Drean, Product Manager Lenses at Nikon Europe B.V says: “This great new lens is perfectly suited for Nikon D300 and D90 users, and works very well with our other mid-class DSLRs too. Thanks to its Silent Wave Motor, it is also suitable for models without a built-in motor such as the D40 and the D60, for example. Its affordable price is no reflection on its superior quality, though, as its high-reproduction performance, minimum distortion and build quality are almost equivalent to those of the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED.”

Superior quality build and excellent reproduction capacity
The AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24MM F/3.5-4.5G ED offers a focal length between 10 to 24mm and a picture angle equivalent to a focal length of 15 to 36 mm in FX/35mm format. Thanks to its ring-type Silent Wave Motor (SWM), its autofocus is quiet and fast. Housed in a compact and lightweight body with Nikon’s unique high-quality exterior design, the NIKKOR advanced build quality ensures smooth operation and durability.

The optical system features ED glass and a-spherical lenses optimised for digital SLRs with an excellent capacity for accurate image reproduction, delivering high-resolution, high-contrast images whilst minimising chromatic aberration. Using the internal focusing (IF) system, the lens barrel length does not change whilst focusing, giving it a more durable build and allowing for the use of heavy attachments.

The lens also has two focus modes – M (Manual) and Manual-priority auto (M/A). M/A mode enables a user to switch rapidly between autofocus and manual focus by merely rotating the focus ring even during AF operation. This allows precise focus adjustment without taking your eye off of the viewfinder.

The AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24MM F/3.5-4.5G ED is supplied with 77-mm snap-on front lens cap LC-77, rear lens cap LF-1, bayonet hood HB-23 and flexible lens pouch CL-1118.

The AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24MM F/3.5-4.5G ED will be on sale from May (TBC) with an MSRP guide price of EUR849.

入門單反市場近期可算是相當的熱鬧，Canon 的 EOS 500D 尚未正式推出，Nikon 便已作出反擊，剛剛便正式發表了全新的入門單反 D5000。除了支援 HD 高清拍片，令人意想不到的是 D5000 竟然配備了一個翻轉式的多角度 LCD，加上相機擁有 1230 的像素以及配備了由 D90 下放的對焦系統，單看規格，已是甚有看頭。

作為一部最新機款，D5000 可謂將各種大熱功能集齊一身，相機不單支援 Live View 拍攝，更可進行 HD 高清拍片。透過 D-Movie 模式，D5000 最高可拍攝 1280 x 720 @ 24fps 的 HD 高清有聲影片，雖然影片只沿用 AVI 格式，不過相機卻首次配備了一個 2.7 吋的翻轉式多角度 LCD。利用顯示屏的雙軸設計，用家可輕鬆的以高低角度構圖，甚至是進行自拍。

定位介乎 D60 與 D90 之間，D5000 當中有不少規格其實已直迫中階的 D90。除了同樣配備了一片 1230 萬的 CMOS，相機亦引入了 LPF、airflow 多重除塵系統以減少感光元件的入塵問題。而為加強相機的動態拍攝能力，廠方更特別由 D90 下放了 11 點的 Multi-CAM 1000 自動對焦系統，配合 3D 追焦以及 4fps 的連拍，令動態拍攝的成功率得以進一步的提升。

雖然定位入門，不過 D5000 於耐用性方面還是有一定的保證，其中快門便有同級中少有的 10 萬次耐用度。而針對入門用家，D5000 則特別新增了多達 19 個不同的場景模式，相機並加入了人面對焦功能，以便由消費相機升級的用家，亦可即時上手。

Nikon D5000 預計將於 5 月 1 日推出，淨機身定價為 85,000 日圓。
